Sri Mulyani : Pertamina has a Responsibility to be a Pillar of Achieving the Net Zero Emissions Target

JAKARTA – PT Pertamina (Persero) is considered to be a pillar of achieving zero carbon emissions or Net Zero Emissions which is targeted by the Government of Indonesia in 2060 or sooner.

Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati said that the net zero emissions target uses the principles of affordability and fairness. This means that carbon emitters have a greater responsibility than others. The energy sector has a contribution to reduce carbon emissions, and is second only to the forestry and other land use (FoLU) sector.

“As an energy company, Pertamina has a big responsibility to be a pillar of achieving net zero emissions,” she said while speaking at the 2021 Pertamina Energy Webinar in Jakarta, Tuesday (7/12).

The Minister of Finance said that to meet the emission reduction target of 41% by 2060, the FoLU sector is targeted to reduce emissions by 700 million tons of CO2e at a cost of Rp 90 trillion. Meanwhile, the energy sector with a contribution to reduce 450 million tons of CO2e requires funds of up to Rp 3,500 trillion.

“Very different. Energy is a very expensive and costly sector, but it is important for the people and it is important to reduce CO2 with the second role after FoLU,” said Sri Mulyani.

The Minister of Finance added that the Ministry of Finance will continue to support efforts to overcome climate change, including achieving the target of net zero emissions.

Ego Syahrial, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said that Indonesia has determined to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector by 314 million CO2e with its own efforts and 466 million tons of CO2e with international assistance. In 2020, Indonesia’s total energy emissions will reach 586.8 million tons of CO2e.

“We hope that with the implementation and strategy towards net zero emissions, we can reduce energy sector emissions to only 401 million tons of CO2e by 2060. Meanwhile, if we do nothing or business as usual, then energy sector emissions are estimated to reach 2,039 million tons of CO2e,” Ego said.

According to Ego, Indonesia has committed to reducing emissions, which President Joko Widodo emphasized at COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland last November that Indonesia will be able to contribute more quickly to achieving the target of net zero emissions. One of the efforts made is the use of Solar Power Plants (PLTS), both in the form of Small-Scale Solar Power Plant, Floating Solar Power Plant, and Large-Scale Solar Power Plant.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, we appreciate Pertamina for starting the use of Solar Power Plants either through the Green Energy Station program at gas stations, installation in office buildings, and other facilities. For this reason, we hope that Pertamina can continue to improve its performance, innovate, and always adapt to the times so that it can continue to play an active role in realizing the big agenda towards an advanced Indonesia that implements green economy, green technology, and green products,” said Ego.
