JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo inspected the Rumpin Seedbed Nursery, Bogor, West Java, which has completed the construction process and will soon start producing seeds with a capacity of 12 million seedlings per year, Friday (19/11). This seedbed nursery is a clear proof of Indonesia’s seriousness in dealing with the impacts of climate change.
“We want to show that Indonesia is serious in dealing with the impacts of climate change and we show this seedbed nursery center which in one year can produce 12 million seedlings,” said Jokowi during the visit.
Jokowi hopes that by building a nursery like the one in Rumpin, it can improve the environment and deal with the impacts of climate change on the upstream side. Jokowi targets the construction of approximately 30 similar seedbed nursery centers in the next three years.
“We will make it in the next three years approximately 30 of these from the government. But I will also force all palm oil companies, mining companies to also prepare nurseries like this so that there will also be improvements in the environment where the mining is located, where the oil palm plantation is,” said Jokowi.
Present with Jokowi were British Ambassador to Indonesia, Owen Jenkins, United States Ambassador to Indonesia, Sun Yong Kim, Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, Cameron Mackay, European Union Ambassador to Indonesia, Vincent Piket, and World Bank Country Director, Satu Kahkonen.
Jokowi invited the ambassadors to tour a number of facilities, such as the germination area, production house area, acclimatization area, to open planting areas. A number of tree seedlings prepared here will later be planted in critical lands in need.
“Earlier I was shown about albasia or sengon seeds, then eucalyptus seeds, then there are teak seedlings, there are also mahogany seeds, which we all produce here and we hope that later in January these seeds will start to come out to be planted in places that are suitable for planting, such as frequent floods and landslides areas, which requires rehabilitation for critical lands,” said Jokowi.
Siti Nurbaya, Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK), said that since 2020, six seedbed nursery centers have been prepared and will gradually be built, starting this year.
Siti Nurbaya said the Rumpin Nursery Center would be an example for the completion of the other five nurseries.
The Rumpin Nursery Center is a public-private partnership (KLHK-PUPR-APRIL) work model. The main work of the nursery has been completed. Seed production of 1 million a month or 12 million a year.
“There is a lot of homework that must be prepared to build up to 30 units of the Rumpin-class nursery. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry will immediately prepare a location plan, collaboration support capacity and of course, the best location in regions in Indonesia. I will immediately consolidate with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry internally before consulting the relevant ministries/agencies,” said Siti Nurbaya. (RA)
Some of the nursery centers to be built include:
1. Rumpin Nursery Center in West Java Province covering an area of 128 hectares, with a capacity of 16 million seeds;
2. IKN Nursery Center in Production Forest Area, Mentawir Village, Sepaku District, North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan Province covering an area of 120 hectares, with a capacity of 15 million seedlings per year;
3. Lake Toba Nursery Center in the Protected Forest Area of Sibisa Block, Motung Village, Ajibata District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra Province, covering an area of 37.25 hectares, with a capacity of 5 million seedlings per year;
4. Labuan Bajo Nursery Center covering an area of 30 hectares, in the Satar-Kodi Production Forest Area, Nggorang, Komodo District, West Manggarai Regency, NTT Province, covering an area of 30 hectares, with a capacity of 5 million seedlings per year;
5. The Mandalika Nursery Center is located in the Protected Forest Area, Rembitan-Sengkol, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency, NTB Province, covering an area of 35.25 hectares, with a capacity of 5 million seedlings per year; and
6. The Likupang Nursery Center in the Batu Putih TWA Area, Batu Putih Bawah, Ranowulu District, Bitung City, North Sulawesi Province, covering an area of 30.33 hectares, with a capacity of 5 million seedlings per year.
